Yoav Shapira
Director of Engineering, Meta
I am a serial entrepreneur, engineer, product guy, and executive with a passion for efficiency and getting things done. I've been a part of startups from day 0, to thousands of employees, IPOs (plural), and tens of billions of dollars in market capitalization. After 15+ years in startups, I moved to a big company (Meta, fka Facebook), to check out the other end of the scale. I still work with startups as an investor, advisor, or trouble-maker ;)Currently at Meta (fka Facebook), I work on the Metaverse efforts. Prior to that, I worked on Instagram for 3.5 years, and before that, our location and geospatial data infrastructure.
Prior to Facebook, I built and ran the product and engineering teams at Jana (www.jana.com), a Boston-based startup making the internet free for billions of people in emerging markets.
Prior to Jana, I was on the original executive team at HubSpot (NYSE:HUBS), where I ran engineering and product until we separated the two. As the first head of Engineering, I built the team (including developers, designers, QA, DevOps, and more) from nearly scratch through the company growing to hundreds of employees and millions in recurring revenue. HubSpot is now a multi-billion-dollar, publicly-traded company ($HUBS).
Before HubSpot, I helped start CarGurus, the world’s largest automotive shopping community. As the first technical employee I built the entire original product and hired the rest of the team. CarGurus is now a multi-billion-dollar publicly-traded company: $CARG.
Even before that, I went to graduate school at MIT, worked in cheminformatics drug discovery at Millennium Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:MLNM, since acquired), paid some dues and learned some lessons in consulting (Deloitte, wearing a suit every day...), and got my first degrees (BS, MS) in Computer Engineering.
I try to give back to the community by investing in startups, mentoring and advising multiple of them, helping out in various incubators / accelerators, and contributing code to various open-source projects.
I am also interested and active in a variety of sports, some common (e.g. running, basketball) and some less so. Are you into adventure racing? Let's talk :)
